Tragedy strikes IBM Systems Community

There was very, very sad news today. Craig Johnson, one of the most respected and loyal leaders of the IBM System i community was killed in a car accident. From my sources, the accident was in a snowstorm in Iowa as Craig was en route to a funeral.

This loss hits home in the TUG community as Craig was scheduled as speaker for the Feb 17th 2010 -TUG event at he Toronto Lab as well as keynote speaker for the TEC conference April 27-28. He is one of the most well-recognized figures in the IBM Systems world, has been to TUG numerous times in the past and is most known for his efforts in bringing Linux and the LAMP stack (esp. PHP/Zend) to the IBM i community.

I have known Craig for 20 years and he is a prince of person and consummate professional. He had an endearing sense of humour. I had just seen Craig in Austin, Texas  two weeks ago to plan for the upcoming TUG events.

Emails have been pouring in all day and everyone is shocked and saddened. All the emails consistently mention Craig’s kindness, sense of humour, talent, professionalism and dedication to IBM iSeries.

He will be deeply missed and our deepest sympathies go to his family.
